the Rogue Grid system - I already have something similar that I made myself. It's almost exactly what I'm looking for (though it's slightly too large, and the grid could be tighter). The FlashBender Pro looks very interesting. A bit of black fabric and some clothespins is all that is needed to convert it into a small softbox instead of a strip softbox.ĮxpoImaging also makes a grid system for hot-shoe flash that you might look into. You could think outside the box (pun intended) and look at the ExpoImaging Rogue FlashBender Pro which forms a gridded strip softbox - well, perhaps it is still thinking inside the box. But at normal working distances, it's a circle. Sure, if it's brought closer to the subject, the light will eventually become a rectangle. Come on China!Ī softbox won't give you a circle of light, more a rounded rectangle or square.Ī gridded 24" softbox gives me a circle of light when positioned 3 feet from my subject (a white colorama for testing purposes). A small collapsible soft box is what I want, with a grid on the front of it. However I don't have room in my camera bag for reflector dishes (and I'm not sure how well a speedlight would fill them with light). So a hard light, but not the crazy hard light that comes out of a speedlight. What I want is the light quality I get from a studio flash used with a grid reflector + grid (I have Elinchrom reflectors with 18cm grids). Http://Both the Chimera Lighting and Foursquare are the best made softbox systems you can buy.įor an even smaller source I am pretty sure there are a variety of Speedlight mount that are designed to take a Bowens-S mount reflector on the front and then you use a Bowens-S mount 7" or 10" round reflectors that takes a 7" or 10" diameter grid. Something like the Westcott Apollo series looks like it would be awful to use, because I can't easily change the settings on the flash. Sometimes the thing slowly sags down under the weight of the softbox the knobs can be hard to turn (I've got two of these setups, and one is easy to use, while the other has knobs that are really difficult to use). What I hate is that the flash mount is pretty bad. What I love about it are the portability, speed of setup, and that I can use it with or without the grid. I've been using a Cowboy Studio gridded softbox for a while and want to upgrade.
